African Violets

My wife has been cultivating African violets for a number of years now and has had some success with raising plants from clipped leaves and getting them to flower. Right now she has plants with flowers ranging from violet to pink to white in color. As a break from some of my recent late winter landscapes, I took one of the African violets with the fewest flowers (to keep things somewhat simple) and did a drawing of them. This was fun to do and gave me the chance to use some colors I don’t often work with. Maybe I’ll try one with more flowers next…

My African Violets

My African Violet has blossomed, can u see the flower bud! YEAH, after so many months, from 1 single leave to this pot full of leaves.

I have 3 of such pots full of leaves, 1 has blossomed, 1 i have split them because of over-crowding, 1 still remain as it is.

From 1 pot full of leaves, i spilt them into 4 more pots, looks better….heehee. otherwise the flower buds may have hard time finding its way up…

Soil is the easiest factor to manipulate and, to make it even easier, there are ready-mixed potting soils available which are suitable for most plants. These have been formulated to contain the correct amount of nutrition as well as to be of the right consistency. Also available are commercial mixes to suit particular types of plants, for example, an orchid mix or an African violet mix.

Most plants prefer a soil mix which is slightly acidic and which has good drainage. If you prefer to make up your own potting soil, you can mix sterilized loam with compost, and add coarse sand or gravel for drainage. This is the standard potting mix but most people prefer to add something extra to the soil, such as leaf mould (humus), milled bark or coarse pine-bark chips, bone meal, lime or sand, to ensure good drainage, nourishment and consistency

Never use too big of a pot for your African violets because they might stop blooming. African violets like to have crowded roots and when they do they bloom much more profusely.

I love my African violets. I have some that have bloomed for years with little care..they seem to thrive here. Once in awhile they grow long, long, woody stems and seem to try to migrate out and away from their pots. That is my cue to re-pot them….

When having potted plants in your home, make sure that they are planted in
sterilized soil, which is available in most gardening stores. Sterilized soil is
a sure way that critters, fungi and other viruses that are bad for plants and
your household in general.

Re-pot your potted plants after every year, because the nutrients will
gradually drain from the soil. Make sure that the top layer of the soil does not
become hard and if it does, loosen with an old spoon and replace with more
sterilized soil.

Humidity is a surprising factor in your indoor plant’s well-being. During dry
season, take a sponge and wipe the leaves of your indoor plants. Do this once a
week, and this will also keep dust away! Just make sure that your indoor plants
